TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1 and residents are encouraged to include the Florida 511 Advanced Traveler Information System (FL511) in their hurricane plans.
The hurricane season lasts for six months and peaks on September 10. During this time, the state of Florida is at a higher risk to experience a tropical storm or hurricane from June 1 through November 30. In rare circumstances named storms have formed both before and after the official season dates.
The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season was the third-busiest season on record with 21 named storms. Three made landfall in the Florida Panhandle. But whether the 2022 season is below average, average or above average, all it takes is one storm to wreak havoc on the lives of those in its path.
This hurricane season, be sure to include FL511 in your plan for safer travel on Florida’s roads. Residents who evacuate can use the system to plan their motor trip and see road conditions before leaving home. Alerts will appear on the website if there are any motor travel and traffic announcements related to a storm, such as the use of emergency lanes or highway shoulders for vehicles headed away from the storm. It is also helpful to check the Florida 511 Mobile App for motor travel conditions before returning home. Those who do not evacuate are encouraged to use FL511 after a storm to get current road conditions before venturing out. Roads can be affected days after a storm with downed trees, flooding or other impediments.
