Arriving military members and their families are often first-time Florida residents unfamiliar with the state’s vast roadway system. Learning how to navigate a new daily commute to the base without delays for a prompt, safe and on time arrival is mission critical for success in a military culture.

The Florida 511 Traveler Information System provides real-time traffic information that can help military members navigate roadways efficiently.

Military users can access this information by downloading the Florida 511 mobile app from their device app store, visiting the FL511.com website, setting up a My Florida 511 personalized services account on the website, checking Florida 511 Twitter feeds or calling the 511 interactive voice response system.

New features to enhance user experience recently added to the Florida 511 system include the addition of weather forecasts and alerts, live traffic cameras, the ability to create and manage custom routes, hurricane evacuation information and more.

This toolkit contains suggested resources – article content, social media posts, base marquee content and public service announcements – for military communications personnel to use in various communications materials to promote use of Florida’s only official source for statewide traffic information to military members and their families.

Add Florida 511 to Your Morning, Evening Commute

Learning traffic patterns in a new location can be daunting for military members and their families who’ve recently moved to Florida.

It can be equally as frustrating for resident military members, active-duty and reserve, whose first daily task is arriving safely and on time to work.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) 511 Traveler Information System is the state’s only official source for traffic information. New Florida 511 system enhancements include a new mobile app, updated website, interactive phone system and personalized traffic alerts.

The Florida 511 system gathers information from several state and local sources, such as traffic cameras, traffic sensors, state police, state roadside assistance vehicles and mobile data.

“Florida’s 511 continues to integrate data from multiple sources to provide accurate, real-time information. However, in addition to the website and phone system, information is also delivered through state-of-the-art mobile apps,” said Russell Allen, program manager of Florida’s 511 Traveler Information System. “We couldn’t be more excited.”

Military members can download the free mobile app from Google Play or the Apple App Store or by visiting the FL511.com website.

Using the app or on the website, a user can enter his or her home address or military installation address to receive guided point-to-point navigation, alternate commuter routes and up-to-the-minute traffic updates.

These updates include traffic incidents, congestion, construction, weather and other factors that may impact your drive time. Many of these updates are also available on 13 statewide, regional or roadway-specific Florida 511 Twitter accounts.

The 511 phone system features a simple call navigation system that allows the caller to receive quick traffic updates for the roadway along their travel route. The phone system can also connect the user with other state transit agencies.

Another way to receive Florida 511 traffic information is to register on the website for a My Florida 511 personalized services account. Custom alerts can be saved for any route the user selects.

For safety, Florida 511 recommends users not check the app, social media feeds or website while driving. Instead, check before you leave or ask a passenger to check the app for you.
