2017 Speedweeks at Daytona Toolkit

“Drivers, start your engines!”

When race fans hear that iconic command on Feb. 26, they’ll know that the Daytona 500 – “The Great American Race” – is just minutes away from its roaring start. And with good planning, a little luck and up-to-the-minute info from Florida 511, none of those fans will be stuck in traffic and listening to it on the radio while making their way to the track.

Veteran fans know the race usually draws 250,000 spectators to the grandstand and infield during the event that caps the ninth and final day of 2017 Speedweeks at Daytona. To arrive safely and on time at the largest annual sporting event in Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) encourages fans to use its Florida 511 Traveler Information System beforehand.

The Florida 511 2017 Speedweeks at Daytona Toolkit provides resources to help spread the word. The toolkit includes suggested newsletter content, social media posts and public service announcements for use leading up to the Daytona 500 and other Speedweeks at Daytona events.

FDOT’s Florida 511 Traveler Information System – The perfect addition to your travel planning pit-crew!

The 2017 NASCAR Cup race series officially begins with the running of the 59th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 26. ‘The Great American Race’ brings an estimated 250,000 fans to Daytona International Speedway, with tens of thousands more attending preliminary Speedweeks at Daytona events. The Florida Department of Transportation’s Florida 511 Traveler Information System can help race fans plan a route to the Daytona International Speedway and arrive safely before the waving of the green flag starts the race.

Before leaving on race day, visit FL511.com and check the interactive statewide road map on the home page to find out if crashes or other traffic incidents are causing congestion and delays along your planned route. The map provides up-to-date information on all of Florida’s interstates, toll roads and other major metropolitan roadways, including traffic speeds, congestion, incidents, construction, message signs and weather. You also can view traffic cameras on roads and intersections near the racetrack, including Interstate 4 (I-4), Interstate 95 (I-95), International Speedway Boulevard (US 92), Williamson Boulevard, Beville Road (State Road 400) at the end of I-4, Clyde Morris Boulevard and LPGA Boulevard.

If you sign up for a My Florida 511 personalized services account on the website, you can create routes to Daytona International Speedway, and receive up-to-the-minute, route-specific email or text traffic alerts. You can even plan for rain-delays with weather alerts supplied to Florida 511 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). During your race-day commute, you can have a passenger check the interactive map feature on the free Florida 511 mobile app, available on Google Play or the Apple App Store, to receive real-time traffic information for roads leading to the speedway. You can also use the app to select an alternate route if congestion or an incident causes a delay on your planned route.

You also can call 511 toll-free or follow one or more of the 13 statewide, regional or roadway-specific Twitter feeds (#FL511), including @FL_511_I4, @FL511_I95 and @FL511_CENTRAL to receive real-time traffic information.
