Make Memorial Day Weekend Travel Plans with Florida 511

TALLAHASSEE — Florida residents and visitors heading to a parade, barbeque or favorite getaway spot for the Memorial Day weekend can get help navigating Florida roads from the Florida Department of Transportation’s Florida 511 Traveler Information System.

According to AAA’s 2017 Memorial Day Travel Forecast for Florida, 1.86 million travelers are projected to be drivers, a potential 3.1% increase over 2016 and largest number for the holiday in the last 12 years.

Motorists can minimize delays by using the real-time traffic information provided by Florida 511. They should check the interactive roadway map on for traffic incident information in English or Spanish. They also can view roadway cameras showing current driving conditions.

Before leaving or heading back home, motorists should check current conditions via the free Florida 511 mobile app, available on Google Play or the Apple App Store then select an alternate route if necessary.

Travelers can register on the website or mobile app for a free My Florida 511 personalized services account to create and save door-to-door routes from their house or hotel to the beach, restaurants or other favorite destinations. Each route includes travel time estimates, traffic incident information and the ability to set up custom email or text alerts.

Additional ways to receive traffic information from Florida 511 include calling 511 toll-free from any phone in the state and following one or more of the statewide, regional or roadway-specific Twitter feeds (#FL511).

FDOT encourages all drivers to visit the Florida 511 website before leaving to travel safely and experience fewer delays, or have a passenger check the mobile app to avoid using a phone while driving. | @MyFDOT |
