511 Users Benefit from New Northwest Florida SunGuide Center

The SunGuide Center - a new high-tech traffic management center in Northwest Florida - will offer a guiding hand to 511 users traveling in the area. The 511 system is FDOT's traffic and roads information service.

Located near the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District 3 office in Chipley, the SunGuide Center is designed to monitor traffic flow and provide real-time information to motorists and emergency responders.

The impressive technology at the new transportation center includes 184 closed-circuit cameras that run along 158 miles of Interstate 10, as well as 56 miles of U.S. 231 from Bay County to the Alabama state line. Construction is expected to be completed by early February.

The cameras aid the traffic management and emergency response systems between Pensacola and Tallahassee, but they will not record or store the video that they transmit. The new Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) also includes the ability to convey important messages to drivers via dynamic message signs and highway advisory radios. Moreover, it allows the system to gather anonymous data on traffic flow along with information about visibility, wind and pavement conditions.

“This technology sets the stage for automated and connected vehicles in the future,” said Kenneth Shiver, District 3 ITS Operations Manager.

"With Florida’s growing population and heavy truck traffic to and from the nearby ports of Pensacola, Panama City and Port St. Joe, the SunGuide Center opens at a crucial time," said Lee Smith, District 3 ITS Program Manager.

Helping drivers avoid difficult conditions and directing the right equipment to the precise area after an accident can save lives and time. “The quicker we can respond, the safer people will be,” Shiver said.
